CriticismsMany critics only have good things to say about Anton Chekhov's works. They say that he is the master of mysterious stories with hidden meanings that really make the reader think. They say that reading one of his stories is like looking straight into Chekhov's soul. "The Chekhov mood is that cave in which are kept all the unseen and hardly palpable treasures of Chekhov's soul, so often beyond the reach of mere consciousness." — Constantin Stanislavski, My Life in Art (Theatre Arts Books, 1924) Critics also have this to say about him: "His genius lies above all in his creative gifts as a writer of short stories. ... In fact, his plays derive directly from his stories, in which, it seems to me, the texture is far richer." — VS Pritchett I can agree with these critics. Chekhov's stories were very enigmatic. I really had to think to uncover the meaning behind the works that I read. He was definitely a very gifted author and playwright.
